The Kansas City Star teams up with the ACLU...

... to choose not to report information.

On Saturday, May 26, 2007, the Kansas City Star provided links to two AP stories (here and here) about an Ohio felon named Christopher Newton who was sentenced to death.  Evidently, because of the man's obesity, it was difficult to administer the poison, and it took the state longer to kill him than it should have.

Here's one quote the AP got from the ACLU:

  • “What is clear from today’s botched execution is that the state doesn’t know how to execute people without torturing them to death,” American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio attorney Carrie Davis said.

And from a doctor:

  • "It seems too long," Ohio State University surgeon Jonathan Groner said. "The whole thing seems agonizing."

But neither article mentioned the man's crime

According to two articles (here and here):  It turns out, the very large (265 pounds at death) Newton beat and choked to death a 130-pound prison cellmate over a game of chess.
