Topeka races: Mayor, four city council districts up for election today

Topeka Capital-Journal:

Shawnee Countians outside the city limits of Topeka are getting a “bye” from their civic obligation to vote today.

Today is primary election day for city and school district offices in Kansas, but in Shawnee County only the voters in Topeka have any reason to go to the polls. All Topeka voters are entitled to vote today, if only to cast a ballot for a mayoral candidate.

The site provides a form for filling in a street address to bring up such information as the polling place location and which city council district covers that address.

A change in state law requires a primary only when three or more people file to run for an office. The three candidates receiving the most votes in the primary go on to the general election ballot on April 7.

With five announced candidates for mayor, all Topeka voters are eligible to participate in selecting the three candidates to be on the general election ballot. Incumbent Mayor Bill Bunten is facing four challengers — Jason Dabney, Jon-Wesley D. O’Hara, Jeff Preisner and Randal Trackwell.
