Ashbrook Center: Obama Abolishes President’s Council on Bioethics

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

…with one day’s notice. I actually have no problem with this, except for the the lack of notice. A couple of reports–including a great one on organ markets–were about to be issued, and there was one more meeting scheduled for next week. In the gracious letter terminating my appointment, I’m reassured that “President Obama recognizes the value of having a commission composed on experts on bioethical issues to provide objective and non-ideological advice to his Adminstration.” I’m also aware that those are three shots at members like me–mere faith-based amateur ideologues. This would be a great day for you to review the accomplishments of the Kass/Pellegrino Council at bioethics.gov.

PAPERS WRITTEN BY K-STATE STUDENTS HONORED BY MIDWEST ASSOCIATION FOR CANADIAN STUDIES

MANHATTAN — Papers written by two Kansas State University students have been honored by the Midwest Association for Canadian Studies.

Their papers, which focused on issues impacting French Canadians, were presented at the 2008 conference of the Midwest Association for Canadian Studies in St. Louis, Mo. The paper awards were only recently announced.

Abby Heraud, a graduate student in French literature, Council Grove, received the conference’s Best Graduate Student Paper Award for “Protofeminism: Gender Roles and Sexuality in Gabrielle Roy’s ‘Bonheur d’occasion.’”

“Using modern feminist frameworks, the paper explained how Roy’s work could be seen as a precursor to the feminist movement,” Heraud said. “Also, due to the historical and social context at the time Roy was writing, there appears to be a struggle between her ‘feminist’ values and the constraints placed upon the characters in the novel by the society in which they are living, which posits the question, ‘Can Roy be considered a feminist author?’” (more…)

The American TFP: The Pro-Abortion Movement’s Best Kept Secret

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

In the wake of George Tiller’s killing, many pundits and pro-abortionists have tried to project the shadow of his assassination onto the entire pro-life movement.

A June 2 Associated Press (AP) article titled: “Suspect in doctor killing railed against abortion” exemplifies the attempt. Although the AP professes to be an unbiased news source, the only pro-lifers interviewed expressed support for Tiller’s slaying and a substantial part of the story outlined the increased security measures abortion mills will now assume. Center for Individual Freedom: “The Emperor Has No Clothes!” – Ominous Poll Numbers for Obama

CFIF:

Cataloguing Barack Obama’s mendacity is like attempting to isolate individual pellets during a driving hailstorm.

Each of his fabrications is astonishing in its sheer audacity, but quickly fades into anonymity amid the endless barrage. And because he issues them with such rapidity, the effect is a contagion of mass amnesia that soothes the fawning “watchdog” media and induces stupor among the public. (more…)

Noel Schulz Combines Roles As Engineering Professor And First Lady At Kansas State University

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

MANHATTAN — Noel Schulz was inspired by both of her parents to complete an education in engineering. Her father was a college-level electrical engineering professor and her mother was an elementary school teacher. Also, while attending the Virginia Governor’s School for Math and Science the summer before her senior year in high school, she was surrounded by peers who thoroughly enjoyed math and science — just like her.

Today, Schulz is a nationally recognized expert in power systems engineering who researches the use of computers, including intelligent systems, to solve problems in power system design, operations and controls.

Schulz originally chose to study power engineering because she wanted to make a difference by improving existing systems and developing new power system solutions for developing countries. Her research has been funded by a variety of agencies, including the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Departments of Defense, Energy and Homeland Security. She also works with electric utilities and power equipment manufacturers.

In August 2009, Schulz will join K-State to become the Paslay professor of electrical and computer engineering. She came from Mississippi State University, where she held an endowed professorship as the Tennessee Valley Authority Professor in power systems engineering.

As an administrator, Schulz has been actively involved in the recruiting and retaining women in engineering, faculty development and the encouragement of international experiences in education. She has initiated faculty networks for women at two universities and served as the director of faculty development and women in engineering at Mississippi State for several years.

Her teaching interests include power systems, energy conversion, application of computer programs to power engineering, application of intelligent systems to engineering problems, fundamentals of electrical circuits, renewable and distributed generation and smart grid technologies.

Schulz has received a number of awards and belongs to the American Society for Engineering Education and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering, both from Virginia Tech, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Schulz is married to Kirk Schulz, K-State’s president, and has two sons, Timothy and Andrew. (more…)
