Chiquita Coggs, Kansas 3rd District Republican Party Secretary: Column on Card-check bill, “Freedom of Choice Act”

From the 3rd District Newsletter, by Chiquita Cogga:

At the State Party meeting during Kansas Day activities for 2009, a resolution proposed by Jeffrey Locke was introduced by Mrs. Kim Borchers regarding the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) that President Obama has promised to support and sign into law. In a nutshell the resolution simply declared that Kansas Republicans would stand in opposition to this proposed legislation as it is clearly in violation of the rights of an unprotected segment of our population, the unborn child. A single phrase in the resolution caught my eye and my interest; it stated that Kansas Republicans would stand in “fierce opposition” to this legalized sanction of murder. While I took the opportunity to seek greater clarification of that opposition by asking that we do more than give “lip service” in standing in “fierce opposition,” when I took my seat it occurred to me that I had done just that, only given lip service to the notion.  As an African American woman, who represent approximately 7% of the US population, it is disheartening, to say the least, to know that a disproportionate number of abortions, over 35%, are performed on women who look like me. It is already heartbreaking to know that hundreds of babies are legally murdered every day, but when I look at it from my perspective, no matter who justifies this practice or for what reason, it looks like genocide. And even though Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi discontinued her public declaration for political correctness (you cannot take back words once they have been released), her belief that public financial support of abortion should be considered as a part of economic stimulus gives even greater validity to my perception of genocide through the murder of little black babies across this nation.  When I talk to people about abortion too many of my peers say that even though they do not personally believe in abortion, they don’t feel that it is their responsibility to oppose someone else’s right to murder their own babies. I see this attitude not only in many African American women that I meet, I see it in the actions of Kansans every day as we turn our backs on and close our eyes to what we see as somebody else’s right to commit murder. While on one hand we stand up to prevent the extinction of the Spotted Owl or the Niangua Darter, we vote for and uphold laws to abort our children’s lives. I believe we have become confused in our efforts to be politically correct and to try to please everyone, regardless of their actions or beliefs. But as for me and my house, we will stand in “fierce opposition” to The Freedom of Choice Act.

  1. John Hall Says:

Am I confused or are they? I thought the “Freedom of Choice” act was to eliminate the need for unions to organize a company by obtaining a number of employee cards showing interest in the union. The requirement to hold an NLRB election was to be eliminated.

To Mr. John Hall: If you will check your legislative actions you will discover that the Employee Free Choice Act deals with Union Card Check issues and the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) deals with the freedom (if you wish to call it that) of women to choose to murder their babies.
