Tiahrt message: Tiahrt Leads Effort to Reduce DC Abortion Rate
WASHINGTON- U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) led Republican efforts to prohibit taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions in Washington, D.C. Tiahrt’s amendment would reinstate a 14-year-old prohibition on publicly-funded abortions that Democrats stripped this year at the request of President Obama.
The provision, commonly referred to as the ‘Dornan Amendment’ was offered by Tiahrt and U.S. Congressman Lincoln Davis (D-TN) during the House Appropriations Committee markup of the Fiscal Year 2010 Financial Services bill. Despite strong Republican support, it was defeated on a largely party-line vote.
“When given the opportunity this week, Democrat appropriators voted to allow the District of Columbia to use public funding for abortions without limitations. The door is now open for American taxpayers to pay for abortions, even into the ninth month of pregnancy. This was the wrong decision and one that is contrary to the will of the American people.”
Tiahrt cited a recent study showing nearly 70 percent of Americans oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund or subsidize abortions.
