Lenexa, Kansas Police Department E-Watch

From lenexa:

This Summary is of selected criminal trends and is not reflective of all police activity

For the two weeks ending 08/10/09 Lenexa officers investigated 569 incidents, conducted 150 street checks and field interviews, wrote 414 citations, and made 130 arrests, including 15 arrests for DUI and 7 arrests for narcotics violations.

PATROL ACTIVITY

Multiple times every day officers are briefed at “roll calls” for their tours of duty. During these roll calls supervisors go over recent activity which sets the tone for that shift’s patrol activity. Patrol officers also keep in mind criminal activities in other jurisdictions, local and nationwide, which dictate extra patrol and direct a substantial portion of the officer’s time to those “hot spots” during their shift.

SEXUAL BATTERY

Johnson County Park Police are seeking information regarding a sexual battery that took place on The Streamway Trail below the dam at Shawnee Mission Park on August 2nd at about 12:47 pm. The victim and a male friend were walking on the trail loop west of the dam when the suspect jogged towards them once without incident. Later while the couple was still on the trail the suspect again jogged toward them. On this occasion the suspect reached out and grabbed at the female victim. The victim’s male friend chased the suspect who ran south on the trail. He was not caught. The suspect is described as athletically built white male in his 20’s with blue eyes, short light blonde hair and facial hair of the same color. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and baby blue colored shorts made of a “slick” material. If you have any information please call Johnson County Park Police at 913-438-7275 or the Sheriff’s Dispatcher at 913-782-0720. This incident serves as a good reminder to always carry a cell phone with you.

PHYSICAL DISTURBANCES

Officers responded on numerous physical disturbances recently. Several of the cases were domestic related and involved boyfriends and girlfriends, fathers and daughters, and brothers and sisters. Most of the cases, excepting one, resulted in minor physical injuries. The disputes stemmed from arguments including home computer usage, not letting a family member sleep, and financial issues.

An argument in Quivira Place on 78th Terr between two long-time feuding women, who have children by the same man, turned physical when an 18 year-old battered the other who is 19 years old. The incident was witnessed by a non-involved witness and charges are pending against the suspect.

Numerous officers responded to an armed disturbance near 76th & Halsey where the caller reported that she had barricaded herself in a bathroom and that her armed (with a hammer) intoxicated husband was attempting to forcibly enter their locked apartment. Upon their arrival officers forced entry into the apartment but only found the 36 year-old victim inside. Other officers located the 37 year-old “suspect” outside. Through their investigation the officers determined the report was greatly exaggerated and that no crime had taken place.

Jealousy appears to be the motive behind an unprovoked Aggravated Battery at a 97th & Quivira area bar. The incident led to substantial injury to a 22 year-old man who was bleeding and unconscious when officers first arrived. The suspect had fled and officers identified him as a 27 year-old man from Texas, who already has a substantial criminal record. Felony charges are pending and it is believed he has fled the area. When he is apprehended, and we have enlisted the cooperation of Texas authorities, he will be extradited back to Kansas. The victim will likely be undergoing months of medical treatment to treat his injuries.

BURGLARY

There were eight residential burglaries (six to apartments) reported in the last two weeks. This is an inordinately higher number than usual and in at least three cases persons of interest have been identified. The first incident highlighted took place at a 95th St area hotel where the Los Angeles victim reported that although there was no force used to his locked hotel room door, he was missing a computer case, a plane ticket, and cash.

The apartment burglaries took place in Charter House near 97th Terr & Monrovia, in both Rosehill Pointe and Rosehill Springs on 88th St Ct, in Woodridge on Hauser and 88th Circle, Park Edge in the 8200 blk Renner, and the office of The Trails on Renner. In Charter House a laptop and camera were taken and the victim suspects his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. The Rosehill Point case was an attempted burglary through the front door (defeated by a good strong lock) while in Rosehill Springs the victim believes her step son, who was recently released from prison, stole a large quantity of property including two big screen televisions, video equipment, a handgun, and a safe containing cash. He was interviewed after he was arrested on unrelated charges and denied involvement. That investigation is continuing. In Woodridge on Hauser an apartment was forcibly entered and a laptop computer and camera were stolen while on 88th Circle another apartment was forcibly entered and a television set was taken.

In Park Edge entry was gained through an unlocked back door. Nothing was taken but a TV was damaged. Lastly in The Trails, midnight shift officers were initially sent for suspicious activity where a resident saw a computer monitor outside his apartment window. The officers soon discovered that the monitor, several computers, and other electronics had been stolen from The Trails office. Initially they found there was no force to a clubhouse door (the keys are only given to residents) but as they investigated they did find forced entry into a computer room. The patrol officers called for a canine officer who tracked two of the suspects to an apartment in the neighboring Reserve Apartments complex. The officers located and arrested two juveniles there, and then arrested two more juveniles in The Trails. All of the stolen property was recovered.

The last residential burglary mentioned took place in the 11300 blk of Mullen where the only item taken was a girl’s bike from the garage while the garage door was left standing open. Please remember to close your garage doors whenever you leave sight of them.

Vehicle burglaries continue to plague the entire area and the latest cases to have any leads occurred in the area of Lackman & Lingle where four incidents were reported just before dawn. Officers initially responded to suspicious persons in area yards and just before the officers arrived in the area the suspects fled the area in a gold colored SUV. In these cases the cars had been left unlocked. Taken were sunglasses, a backpack, and GPS units. Two young adult men from Fairway, KS are persons of interest as the cases are investigated.

THEFTS

There were a large number of thefts these last two weeks but one case stuck out from the others. This was a shoplifting case at a 95th St department store where the arrested suspect, a 27 year-old man, who was found to be a resident of Community Corrections, had been dropped off in the area by the residential center bus in order for him to get to a work interview. Instead of going to the interview he decided to commit a theft which undoubtedly will cause him further legal problems. When he was released on the new charges he asked for a ride to his interview. His request was denied.

SAFETY REMINDER

Area schools have already started opening. Please remember to SLOW DOWN in the school zones and watch out for the kids. Traffic and patrol officers will be aggressively enforcing the zones with radar, and it is worth noting that the fine for a speeding ticket in a school zone is $50.00 more than that of a normal speeding ticket.
